Question – What does it take to be “tough”?
Answer – The ability to say “NO!”
“NO” is a word that has even more power than “YES” because
the latter usually has a myriad variations of the actual meaning inbuilt.

whilst at the same time knowing that we will try everything we can to get out

So be tough on yourself – learn to say “NO” with dignity.
